Beast Creator Quadrat Surveys

We have kicked off our Beast Creator topic by holding a quadrat survey in our grounds.

The class were divided into groups of four or five and given a metre stick and four cones to plot out their quadrat. They each then had an iPad to take a photo of the quadrat and upload it to Explain Everything. They then marked off every creature they found in the exact location they found it using our mini-beast identification key.

Tomorrow we will making tally charts, producing graphs and then tying to think about the reasons as to why the insects were found in the quadrats.

National reading and Numeracy tests

From 7th to 13th May pupils from Years 2-6 in primary schools will be participating in national Numeracy and Reading assessments along with their counterparts in Years 7-9 in comprehensive schools. By now parents will have received a document giving information for parents regarding the tests. A digital copy can be found by clicking THIS LINK.

The tests will take the form of three individual assessments.
1. Reading test
2. Mathematical Procedural test (measures skills in number, measuring and data skills.)
3. Mathematical Reasoning test (measures how well children can use what they know to solve everyday problems.)

Make do and mend

Our class have been taking the Blitz spirit of make do and mend by making their own clothes from old and no longer wanted materials.

They had to first seek out materials from their wardrobes and those of friends and family that were no longer wanted. They brought them into school and began the design process. Once designs were made they had to take accurate measurements for their chosen garments and then cut the material to fit.

A process then began where the pupils learnt and applied sewing skills to put their outfits together. Regular fittings were held and alterations were made where needed.

This all culminated in a fashion show which was held today where Year 3/4 voted on winning outfits for a number of categories including:

Best representation of the 'Make do and mend' spirit.
Most original design.
Most eye-catching.
Most complex design.
Most practical design.

Rhondda Heritage Park Bevin Boys visit

Today our class visited the Rhondda Heritage Park as a closing part of our Blitz topic. In particular we focused on the role of the Bevin Boys during World War Two.

Our first session saw our pupils have the opportunity to look at, handle, play with and try on artifacts from World War Two including Bevin Boy uniforms and air raid sirens. We were also taught about the role of the Bevin boys and the experiences they had moving to coal mining villages to work underground.

Our second session saw our pupils go 'underground' on the mining experience to get to feel how the Bevin Boys might have felt underground during war time.

Moving on Up - Pencoed Comprehensive School Transition Projec

Pencoed Comprehensive School held their 2014 transition celebration concert entitled 'Moving on Up'. Earlier on this term the Year 6 pupils from the primary schools within the cluster were taught a dance routine for the song 'We Go Together'. Cluster schools were also invited to perform a musical piece during the performance.

One of our pupils was chosen to take the part of mini Danny in the song 'Sandy' with one line to sing.

The first half was a showcase of all of the musical and dancing talent at Pencoed Comprehensive school. We were treated to the orchestra playing Pomp and Circumstance and the Harry Potter Suite. We also got to hear; string group performances, a guitar and percussion accompaniment of Wipeout, the choir singing songs from Wicked and Chicago plus recent Eisteddfod winning numbers. Towards the end of the first half the pupils from the cluster schools were invited to perform their number. This included our school's samba group performance which was composed by the pupils of Year 5/6.

The second half was composed of a half hour showcase of Grease. This included our very own mini-Danny and culminated in We Go Together which included all of our pupils.

Aidan Gibbons - The Piano

Our class have been studying Aidan Gibbons's The Piano. We analysed the animated short, plotted emotion graphs, create role on the walls which all lead to the planning and writing of a narrative to accompany the film.

Y Pant Cluster Cross Country Competition - Event 1 - Dolau

On Thursday 3rd April, 19 pupils from Years 3-6 took part in Y Pant Cluster's first Cross Country championship held in Dolau. Our squad consisted of 7 Year 5/6 Boys, 7 Year 5/6 Girls and 5 Year 3/4 Girls.

The event was set up as follows:

Year 5/6 Girls
Year 5/6 Boys
Year 3/4 Girls
Year 3/4 Boys.

The Year 5/6 pupils had two laps of the full track whereas the Year 3/4 pupils had one and a quarter laps. The Year 5/6 Girls went first with the group of seven sticking together for the large part until one or two of them became more aware of the route. Gracie eventually finished 1st out of our school's competitors and 8th overall. The Boys then stepped up to the mark. Again the same tactic seemed to be taken. A bit of competition then kicked in with Charles pushing up to the front eventually finishing 4th overall. Finally as far as our school's competitors were concerned, the Year 3/4 Girls competed in their event. They all raced with smiles on their faces with Eliza coming in first out of our girls.

The event was run as a team competition with the first 3 competitors from each school scoring points. The aim being for each team to score the lowest total possible e.g. first place = 1 point.

Year 5/6 Boys:
There were pupils from 7 schools in this event. Our school finished in third place with a total of 31 points.
The individual positions were:
Charles - 4/31
Dylan - 13/31
Ben - 14/31
Tawfiq - 19/31
Edward - 20/31
William - 22/31
Ellis - 28/31

All pupils who took place thoroughly enjoyed themselves and represented the school well.

Year 5/6 Girls:
Our school team finished sixth out of six schools with 57 points.
The individual positions were:

Katie - 25/32
Eloise - 27/32
Natasha - 31/32
Maya - 32/32

Year 3/4 Girls:
Our team finished fourth out of the five schools who took part:
