Ugly Bug Ball

On Friday 23rd March our class joined in with the Nursery & Reception class Ugly Bug Ball. As both classes were studying similar topics we decided to join together for an afternoon of fun and games.

Miss Rose’s class wrote invitations, inviting us to join their celebrations. We were all so impressed with their writing that we felt it was only right to write back to them. Every child in the class wrote a personal letter to the Nursery & Reception children.

After a good discussion we decided that we were going to write mini beast stories in the week leading up to the Ball, knowing that we would have a deadline of Friday afternoon, whereby we would read our stories in especially designed story tents. After going through the drafting and editing process they spent Friday morning putting the finishing touches to their stories and started to practice reading them aloud.

The class then set up story tents and dens around our school grounds (fortunately the weather was glorious). We then got into our own mini beast costumes (including Mr. Roberts, who came dressed as a fly). Miss Rose’s class was split into groups and divided up amongst our excited storytellers. Both classes had so much fun reading and listening to the stories even though there were lots of nerves and anxiety about reading aloud.

We finished the afternoon off by sitting in the hall to listen to Miss Rose’s class read out their class poem on mini beasts and watch them parade in their costumes and masks.

Everyone had a ball!

Worm Charming 2012

Our class carried out their science enquiry into ‘What source of vibration would be best to attract worms out from the ground?’ The last time that our school held a worm charming event, the whole school took part. The total amount of worms charmed up on the school field that day was...none! The class chose to hold their enquiry today in our willow garden.

They were split into six groups of four and planned out their own enquiries with the groups choosing to use: garden forks, singing, jumping, tambourines and beating the ground. We followed our rules from http://www.wormcharming.com/rules.html with the only difference being that instead of a maximum of two people per 3m x 3m grid we had four.

We did not carry out our event in isolation. A troop of intrigued Nursery and Reception children came down to watch... and even join in the action!

A reminder that at the start of this blog update I told you that we held a whole school worm charming a few years ago and we managed to charge zero worms. In half an hour of charming, the group who sang to the worms charmed two worms. The groups using tambourines managed to charm no worms for the first twenty minutes but ended up with 5. The drums group also charmed 5 worms. The jumping up and down group came third with a fantastic 12 worms. Second place went to the group who chose to beat the ground with their hands; these collected a total of 22 worms. The winners of the worm charming event were the group who chose to use garden forks to create vibrations who managed to attract a fantastic 36 worms!

What a fantastic afternoon everyone had!

Colorfoto Studio Trip

We were fortunate enough to visit the Colorfoto studios in Cardiff this morning. Our class was split into two groups; one group went to the photo shoot studio with Mr. Roberts and the other half went to the photo-lab with Kinga and Mr. Bowden. The photo shoot group saw the children dress up in a variety of ‘interesting’ clothes and have their photographs taken by a professional. The other group were taught about the photographic industry and shown how photos go from the camera to the canvass. After a brief pause, the two groups swapped. We all joined together to have our packed lunches before being invited to see the photos taken in the studio. Everyone had a good laugh at the hilarious results!

Welsh poems about Wales!

Our pupils wrote poems in Welsh about Wales using the five senses in the past tense. Here are some of their poems:

Welais i’r dafad yn chwarae yn y cae,
Roedd yn ddoniol achos mae nhw’n dwp!
Blasu cawl,
Roedd yn diflas achos dw’i ddim yn hoffi genhinen.
Gwrandais i ar pawb yn bloeddio,
Roedd yn uchel achos bod Cymru yn ennill.
Teimlais i pel rygbi,
Roedd yn brwnt achos mae llawer o bobl yn chwarae gyda’r bel.
Gwyntais i petal cenhinen pedr,
Roedd yn prydferth achos mae’n natur.
Dwi’n caru Cymru.
Roedd yn prydferth achos mae’n natur.
Dwi’n caru Cymru.

Welais i cenhinen pedr a cenhinen,
Roedd yn edrych yn hyfryd iawn.
Blasu teisen Cymru,
Roedd yn hyfryd iawn.
Gwrandais i plentyn yn canu,
Roedd yn hyfryd iawn.
Teimlais i petal o cenhinen pedr,
Roedd yn hydref iawn.
Gwyntais i cenhinen newydd,
Roedd yn prydfaith iawn.
Dwi’n caru Cymru.

Welais i tim Cymru yn ennill yn erbyn Lloegr,
Roedd yn bendigedig achos mae stadiwm yn uchel.
Blasu teisen Cymru yn syth o’r popty,
Roedd yn blasus iawn achos mae’n gynnes.
Gwrandais i ar cefnogwr rybgi yn gweiddi am un chwaraewr,
Roedd yn sbwriel achos roedd yn brifo fy clustiau.
Teimlais i crys-t tim Cymru,
Roedd yn hwyl achos dwi’n nerfus ond hapus.
Gwyntais i cae ffres or dafad yn bwyta cenhinen pedr,
Roedd yn ddoniol achos mae’r dafad yn rholio drosodd.
Dwi’n caru Cymru
